URTEXT [original transcription of shorthand notes & additions, before editing for publication] [MiraclesInActionPress]

In this Article, Community Miracles Center [CMC] provides the background for the specific differences between the various editions although it has not been updated to include the ACIM CE.

A Course in Miracles-Original Edition is the manuscript of the dictation of A Course in Miracles which had been completed in September 1972 and had resulted in three volumes—the Text, the Workbook for Students, and the Manual for Teachers. The scribes Helen Schucman and Bill Thetford had divided the Text into chapters and sections and had given titles to each, and they removed a great deal of material from the early chapters, the material they believed was meant for them personally, not for the Course. The edition that resulted from those efforts is the “Original Edition” as published by the Course in Miracles Society [CIMS].

The “Original Edition” manuscript was discovered in 1999 as a result of the ‘discovery phase’ of a lawsuit brought by the copyright holders at that time upon a spiritual community for copyright infringement. It is sometimes referred to as the HLC edition or the “Jesus’ Course in Miracles’ edition. The copyright on the 1975 edition [described below] was overturned in 2003 due to pre-copyright distribution which placed the manuscript in the public domain. There is current copyright on the “Original Edition” as published in 2006 by CIMS. This is the copyright statement on ACIM OE:

Copyright (c) 2011 Course In Miracles Society. Reproduction, sharing and quoting from this material is encouraged. Where such reproduction involves commercial sale of more than ten percent of the total content of the Book in any media, written permission of the copyright holder is required. The above copyright notice and this permission notice shall be included in all copies of substantial portions of the Book.

FIP retains a copyright on the post-1975 edition as described below.

A Course in Miracles, published by the Foundation for Inner Peace [FIP], is the Course as it resulted from an editing project begun by Ken Wapnick upon meeting Helen and Bill and learning of the scribed manuscript. Regarding the changes made to the manuscript in the FIP Edition, this is an excerpt from CIMS “Foreword”:

“In 1973 Ken Wapnick, who had joined their small circle and received a copy of the 1972 manuscript, expressed his belief that further editing was needed. Thetford withdrew from further detailed editing work, and Schucman and Wapnick resumed the editing process. Along with changes in paragraphing, punctuation, capitalization, and section titles, there was a great deal of line-by-line editing. In addition, about one-fifth of the material in the first five chapters was removed. Finally, a new section, the Clarification of Terms, was added. The resulting edition, published in 1975 by the Foundation for Inner Peace, became the Course with which the world would become familiar.”

“In the FIP Edition, the 53 miracle principles are changed to 50. Descriptions of the miracle principles are re-arranged and in some cases obtained from other areas of the text. 127 references to “Soul” are changed to 12. The word “Soul” is either deleted or changed to another word such as creations, you, spirit.” This excerpt is from the following: Copyright TimeLine

The following link is to a side-by-side comparison between the Foundation for Inner Peace [FIP] 2nd Edition and the HLC/Jesus’ Course in Miracles/Original Edition/Sparkle Editions: ComparisonOEv2nd.pdf

The Course of Love [ACOL] is a continuation of A Course in Miracles scribed by Mari Perron. “Gently guides the reader from the experience of separation to the experience of union, which is also to experience the power of God and the force of love.” There are three BOOKS. Book One is A Course of Love, Book Two is four Treatises, and Book Three is The Dialogues and The Forty Days and Forty Nights.

A Course in Miracles Complete and Annotated Edition [ACIM CE] is published by Circle of Atonement. “Course scholar Robert Perry and his colleagues at the Circle of Atonement have worked to carefully transcribe these notes and the result is a new version of A Course in Miracles that – for the first time – contains the source material in its entirety.”

A Course in Miracles Sparkle Edition is essentially the original 1972 manuscript with the changes in preface, punctuation, and numbering as noted below. The content has not been changed. There may however be additions from the URTEXT [first typing of shorthand notes] appearing in brackets in the “Original Edition” that do not appear in the Sparkle Edition.

The URTEXT is the reproduction of the entire handwritten notes of the scribes before there was editing by the scribes, later by Helen Schucman and Ken Wapnick, and subsequently by Robert Perry.

The “Original Edition” contains a FOREWORD written by Course in Miracles Society that does not appear in the “Sparkle Edition”. The Foreword briefly explains how A Course in Miracles came about and how this edition differs from subsequent editions.

The FIP 1st Edition, printed in three separate hardback volumes in 1975, does not contain a PREFACE. It does contain however the CLARIFICATION OF TERMS which appears at the end of the third volume: “The Manual for Teachers”. A subsequent FIP Edition, which would have been the 13th printing of the original volumes, combines all three volumes into a single book and has the addition of second copyright date, 1985. This edition contains, for the first time, a PREFACE which has two sections: “How it Came” and “What it Says”.

THE USE OF TERMS is not located in the “Original Edition” as it was not part of the original manuscript completed by Helen Schucman and Bill Thetford in 1972. The USE OF TERMS was subsequently scribed in 1975 by Helen when the “Original Edition manuscript” was further edited by Helen and Ken Wapnick for a more general publication.

The Course as presented by A Course in Miracles Complete and Annotated Edition [ACIM CE] is a combination of the URTEXT, which is the earliest version, and an early typing of the notes by the scribes to form early renditions of the HLC. [Refer to URTEXT to view actual reproduction of the scribal notes before further editing.] In the HLC manuscript, which is the final typing of the material by the scribes, there are 53 Miracles Principles, but inexplicably, there are only 50 Miracle Principles in this “Complete and Annotated” Edition. Therefore, it seems to be based on a rendition of the scribe’s notes containing what appears to be some editing of the final HLC Edition. It contains the CLARIFICATION OF TERMS as well as APPENDICES, consisting of Cameo Essays, which are special messages given to the scribe.

The first printing of the “Sparkle Edition” contains THE USE OF TERMS as a ‘preface’. The PREFACE in the second printing of the “Sparkle Edition” includes an explanation for the formatting style and a “Publisher’s Note” regarding THE USE OF TERMS as well as THE USE OF TERMS itself. The “Publisher’s Note explains that in the Use of Terms, scribed by Helen, it was explained that the term SOUL was excluded due to its controversial nature. The “Publisher’s Note” indicates that the term SOUL has been restored in the Sparkle Edition to its original position.

In the CIMS “Original Edition” the paragraphs are numbered to make referencing easier. Since page numbers change as typographical corrections are made and additions are entered in brackets from the URTEXT [i.e. the first typing from the shorthand notes], one would need the Chapter and Paragraph numbers to reference a quote with ease.

The 1st FIP edition [3 volume hardback] has no numbering at all. Where the 3 volumes are first combined into a single volume, there is no numbering. In a subsequent 2nd edition of the combined volume, the paragraphs and the sentences within the paragraphs are all numbered.

A Course of Love has numbered the paragraphs.

The ACIM CE has paragraph and sentences numbered.

The Sparkle edition has no numbering at all.

Style and punctuation are also slightly different in all of these editions. Words were emphasized in the shorthand notes by being underlined. When the initial manuscript was typed from the shorthand notes and also verbal information added by Helen Schucman [the scribe], it was done on a TYPEWRITER. Typewriters at that time did not italicize and therefore Bill Thetford, who was co-scribe and the person who typed it, added those words in ALL CAPS for emphasis.

A Course in Miracles-Original Edition italicizes all CAPITALIZATION.

In all editions from the Foundation for Inner Peace [FIP] the CAPITALIZATIONS in the original manuscript were changed to lower case in almost all instances, with a few of the words changed to italics.

A Course in Miracles Complete and Annotated edition has used their own discretion in deciding which words should be emphasized, believing that Helen was “emphasis crazy” and therefore there were far too many words emphasized. Some of these emphasized words are placed in a “soft gray underline” and some are italicized.

The “Sparkle Edition” has kept those words CAPITALIZED.

As far as punctuation goes, the “A Course in Miracles-Original Edition” follows the practices and conventions of the Chicago Manual of Style, and both the Sparkle, FIP, and COA follow Helen’s idiosyncratic use of punctuation.

Hopefully, this document will aid students in answering the many questions they may have regarding the various editions of A Course in Miracles. Although a lot of Course students feel as though they want to read the Course as it was compiled by Helen and Bill, there are many who also want to read the URTEXT [the manuscript typed from the shorthand notes with verbal additions by Helen]. This material was obtained legally from the Library of Congress by the parties in the copyright litigation who had legal access to the material being litigated. It was then obtained by other parties who subsequently illegally shared it on the internet. Presently, the URTEXT is available online here: Urtext At Miracles Action Press

There is a history of the copyright litigation in a Timeline for those who are still interested, although the past is truly gone. It can hurt us not. If you are interested, then there is information on the Trademark ACIM and there is some background information on how the copyright was actually overturned. A copy of the final judgment is here: RULING

On FIP’s website, there is an explanation of the ‘Editing process,’ which explains how the material was edited. FIP Editing History Article

How Could the Death of Someone Hurtful Bring JUSTICE?

BIN LADEN is dead and some people are rejoicing. They are hoping his death will bring a sense of justice to his victims.

Reflections: How could the ‘death’ [which is ultimately unreal] of someone bring a sense of justice? The following is a quote from the Course in Miracles [original edition] that speaks of the Holy …Spirit’s Justice which is quite different from this world’s:

“Vengeance is alien to God’s Mind because He knows of justice To be just is to be fair and not be vengeful. Fairness and vengeance are impossible, for each one contradicts the other and denies that it is real. It is impossible for you to share the Holy Spirit’s justice with a mind that can conceive of specialness at all. Yet how could He be just if He condemns a sinner for the crimes he did not do but thinks he did? And where would justice be if He demanded of the ones obsessed with the idea of punishment that they lay it aside unaided and perceive it is not true? It is extremely hard for those who still believe sin meaningful to understand the Holy Spirit’s justice.

~ A Course in Miracles – oe CH 25 IX paragraph 67

Admittedly, it is extremely hard for those who believe in SIN to lay aside vengeance, condemnation, and punishment. A Brother can be mistaken and do horrible things in this world and yet his REALITY as a Son of God [no matter WHO HE IS] will not have changed one iota. If it would be, then yours would be as well. One Truth ~ We are the Son of our Creator. And in our true Reality, we are SINLESS ~ dreaming a dream of fear.

CHAPTER 25 is such a beautiful CHAPTER. Can we read it now, keeping all our Brother’s in mind [seeming perpetrators and seeming victims]. Do we truly understand what Jesus is saying here? Can we APPLY it to our lives TODAY ~ This day in which some of God’s children are dancing on the grave of their enemy and some are seeking vengeance. When does this drama end? He tells us … here in this Chapter.

“The Holy Spirit’s problem solving is the way in which the problem ends. It has been solved because it has been met with justice. Until it has, it will recur because it has not yet been solved. The principle that justice means no one can lose is crucial to this course. For miracles depend on justice. Not as it is seen through this world’s eyes, but as God knows it, and as knowledge is reflected in the sight the Holy Spirit gives.

“No one deserves to lose. And what would be unjust to him cannot occur. Healing must be for everyone because he does not merit an attack of any kind. What order can there be in miracles, unless someone deserves to suffer more and others less? And is this justice to the wholly innocent? A miracle is justice. It is not a special gift to some to be withheld from others as less worthy, more condemned, and thus apart from healing. Who is there who can be separate from salvation if its purpose is the end of specialness? Where is salvation’s justice if some errors are unforgivable and warrant vengeance in place of healing and return of peace?”

~A Course in Miracles CH 25 X paragraphs 82, 83

The following is an answer to a COMMENT from F.Weber:

“Something to think about. If Osama Bin Laden was captured alive, tried and found guilty in a court of law and sentenced to life imprisonment would that be revenge?”

Thank you for asking this. It’s great to have a question that fosters further understanding. When I sat in quiet with today’s Lesson 126 “All that I give is given to myself” I got a sense of our intimate connection with one another. Every ONE of us is part of the Sonship and is part of the Unity which is the One Reality. If we find ourselves in this 3D dream, in a body, in a society and separate and we know that we are responsible, then we get to use the body to WAKE UP. The Course tells us it is not productive “To deny the denial”. This sounds confusing until we replace the word DENIAL with the word DREAM. It is not productive “To deny the dream”. And it is the ‘dream’ which is the denial of Reality. We can’t deny that we think we are in here in this dream. We are dreaming if we find ourselves anywhere but in eternity. The challenge is to realize that we are dreaming and wake up! And while we’re doing that we need to stop our vehicles at red lights and go when the light turns green. We’re IN the world, but not ‘OF it’. We are getting a sense of this and so we need to accept it and begin to heal the seeming separation.

If Bin Laden had been captured and placed in prison, that would have been the lesson he would have been presented with to learn. He was killed. That is the actual lesson he was presented with which to learn. “All things are lessons God would have me learn”. L193 It would sound ludicrous to say being killed were a lesson presented for his learning only if you believed that death were real. If you believed that there is no such thing as ‘death’ and that only the body, which is part of the dream, ceases to be while you [Spirit] continues, then indeed that experience is a lesson. Many people have had near death experiences in which they experienced their ‘death’ and have come back with a renewed perception of ‘life’.

Only the Loving Thoughts of God are true. Everything else is an appeal for help and healing. Bin Laden is a Child of God. That is a Loving Thought of God. He thought he was separate and had unloving thoughts. That was an appeal for help and healing. His healing would have been an ‘option’ whether he had been incarcerated or killed. That’s the only option there is. We continue on this journey without distance to a goal that has never changed. We are here to heal. And we either chose the option now or later. The end is inevitable.

And once again today’s Lesson is: “All that I give is given to myself.” When we realize our oneness which is the atonement or healing of the separation, then we know that we can ONLY give to ourselves. We are all in this together. We are all going home where we will once again Know there is only GO(o)d. Only Love. Until then the journey is our path and all our experiences are the lessons. In light of all of this, the concept of ‘revenge’ is not only not applicable, it just doesn’t make sense.

[As it appears in the May 2011 Newsletter]

Please speak to us of Anxiety and Panic Attacks.

This is a wonderful topic.  I am delighted to speak to the healing of these two painful problems.

Let Us start by clearly stating that all forms of fear belong wholly to the dream.  They have no place at all as Reality.

When You All chose so long ago to stay within the dream, fear sprung up immediately because You had turned Your backs on Love.  They cannot coexist.  Thus fear became the hallmark of the dream.

Dimly remembering that Love has no fear at all, special relationships became Your goal, in the hopes of alleviating fear.  Obviously that didn’t work, and fear continued to grow, springing from loveless ground.

Once psychiatry was invented, fear garnered many names and diagnoses, yet fear they are and fear they do remain.

Yet two constants all names and types of fear do have.  They exist solely in the dream.  At Home where All is Love, there is no concept for fear at all except in the memory of the rage and fear of the separated Ones.

So whether fear is named as schizophrenia or autism, bi-polar or anxiety, claustrophobia or panic attacks, it hardly matters the name, for all are the direct result of trying to exist within the dream, alone, apart from God and from Yourself, the Holy Spirit.

Very simply, anxiety is fear that cannot be contained and so becomes a constant companion.  The cure is simple indeed, needing determined persistence.  Turn immediately to the Holy Spirit (or Your Guide), asking the Holy Spirit to take over and to tell you what is really True.  Done consistently – realizing that the Holy Spirit is Your Right Mind – anxiety will find no-where to go.   Consistence is the key word.

Two things cannot really dwell in one place for one alone is Real.  And the healing is two-fold, for as You let the Holy Spirit Be You not only has anxiety flown, but You are now coming back into Your Right Mind.

Maybe You would like Me to tell You how to manage fear successfully within the dream, eschewing the radical step of Awakening.  I will do that, yet rarely will it last; the self-centeredness of the dream makes it hard to live as Love.

Panic attacks are stuffed-down anxiety that manages to pop up with a vengeance.  Is not the cure the same?   A mind that lives as Love, focused well on God, finds aught to fear.  If You can stay as that Love, You find Yourself so full with Happiness.

Dear beloved Brothers and dear beloved Sisters, all My words of Love for You have but one focus: Your glad return to Home.  Why stay frightened, all alone, and in pain when Love and Peace and Joy await You?  Loneliness is gone forever in the sweet embrace of a Family that has longed for Your glad return.

And how about Life that’s problem-free; Infinitely interesting living Life as We instead of ‘Me’.  Such dear companions, and each relationship is Holy.

And perhaps You have forgotten just how much fun it is, teleporting through the Universe, and with no fear of falling!  How light and beautiful it feels to Spirit Be.

Ah, won’t You All come Home with Me?

Authentic Guidance ~ Q and A with Carmen

Good Questions
Questions & Answers

By the late Carmen Cameron*
[As it appears in the May 2011 Newsletter]
There is nothing I like more than a good question about the Course.  And by “good question”, I mean a thought provoking one – a question that makes me reassess what I currently believe and perhaps come to see it in a new light. As a result, we have a very interactive study group of Course students here in Louisville where everyone is encouraged to share their insights and questions. It is also a very diverse group with people from widely varying religious backgrounds so we get a lot of very insightful questions and I’ve been making a note of them for the last 15 years.
Question:Can two people receive authentic guidance on an issue even if that guidance is completely opposite for each?
Answer: I’ve gotten that question many times over the years (especially from couples).  And the short answer is YES!Remember that the Course is a customized curriculum.  Each person that comes to it is learning different lessons and in a different order.  So two (or more) people may each be told by the Holy Spirit to follow what seems like a conflicting path simply because they each have a different lesson to learn. This is true even if their (or our) guidance isn’t really from the Holy Spirit but from the ego mind, instead. So, two very sincere ACIM students may feel guided to vote for different candidates for president, for instance.  One student needs to learn the lessons that come from taking responsibility for the outcomes from their choice of the winner and the other has lessons that may center on how they deal with supporting the loser wholeheartedly.

The more important question though is how we respond to situations in which our guidance isn’t the same as the guidance of those we are closely associated with.  For if their choice has brought up a negative reaction in us, the lesson is ours, isn’t it?

I sincerely pray that this is of help to you and God bless you on your perfect journey, always.

Listening by Daniel Tipton

Dare to Be Happy

By Daniel Tipton*~*LISTENING*~

[As it appears in the May 2011 Newsletter]

I found myself bored the other night with nothing to do. I thought it would be a good time to practice my inner work. I decided to continue reading The Impersonal Life, which I am finding extremely helpful. I recommend this to anyone with those deep, basic, nagging questions.

A Course in Miracles is obviously great at addressing these things but it is interesting to read something different and a bit prior.

After some reading, I felt peaceful and decided to head up to my room by the window where I like to absorb information and ask God what he would have me do (many times out of boredom J). I just started doing this and am finding it helpful.

After sitting by the window awhile, the floor started looking comfortable so I sprawled out next to my cat and drifted into a light nap.

As I woke, a louder-than-usual voice said “True inspiration comes from doing, not wanting”. I don’t get these loud voices very often but it got me thinking how The Impersonal Life stresses that we are our own masters and that our true self and spiritual work are all within; that the physical world is all a reflection of that. It also emphasizes that God is in us, just begging for us to listen and create as he would.

Basically, it calls us to keep the focus within, to let creation spring from that place of wisdom, and that materialistic pursuits are only helpful in leading us back to see that the journey is entirely within.

I began to think how all the answers I need are already inside me. I have gone to other people and places before, hoping to get answers, but I always knew that those “answers” would be filtered by my ego anyway; that they were usually things I already knew but had not yet accepted.

If we already have all the answers then it is important to listen. I recently went to the Course in Miracles Conference in San Francisco where Pamela Silberman spoke about her book, Simply Being. In this book, she has journal entries in which she asked God a question and wrote down the answer she heard. I decided to try this for myself and it was a lovely experience.

The following is my conversation. I’m not proclaiming there to be any deep wisdom for others here but it was very therapeutic for me and I want to share. I think this will be a helpful practice going forth. It may have been the ego speaking, it may have been Holy Spirit, or God, but it made me feel good so it doesn’t matter. I personally believe that all acts are acts of creation and thus involve the Holy Spirit. So if I am one with God and the Holy Spirit, then I can say I wrote all of this. If somebody writes something wonderful, then they are the author because they are an amazing co-creator with God. Whether it is a shopping list, The Cat in the Hat, or a work that inspires millions of people, they are holy acts of creation. So let’s take credit for our grandeur. I think this is what the Course calls us to do.

Moving on now, here is how the conversation went after my nap:

Higher Self: (Words that jerked me from my nap) True inspiration comes from doing, not wanting.

me: If this is a world of illusions, how do I keep from feeling withdrawn?

Higher Self: If you were not delusional, you would not see illusions. Do not hide from them. Confront them that your perception may be healed. Go experience as a child. If you think you want something, do something. Wanting enlightenment is not the same as being enlightened. You are already enlightened, so go be that.

me: Why do I get so bored lately and what should I do?

Higher Self: Boredom is not in the now. You are not paying enough attention. Fear not the bounty of opportunities to create that surround you at any moment.

me: How do I look upon the world with excitement and joy? What is holding me back? It seems like it is right there, but there is always something in the way.

Higher Self: Keep removing your blocks. There is much work to do. You know the answers and you know you know the answers. Stop talking your way out of truth. This is why you feel stuck. Your path is covered in the tar of your fear. As you remove your fear, so will you walk your path in grace.

me: This person makes me uncomfortable because they seem so depressed. How can I feel more naturally comfortable around them?

Higher Self: Imagine how your discomfort is making them feel. Give them the peace you want to feel.

me: How do I stay motivated to practice in the physical world when I know my real work is on the inside?

Higher Self: Your inner work prepares you for experiencing the outer. It is important but not complete unless you use it in an act of creation. Listen, learn, and do are the phases of shedding each layer of the ego. Thought leads to creation, creation leads to understanding. Your dedication to inner work will keep you in appreciation of this process, thereby providing you with the inspiration you yearn for.

Gaff ~ Thoughts of a Fisherman

GAFF and the Clamorous Clan
Thoughts of an Old Fisherman
Lorena R. Peter, Ph.D.*

[As it appears in the May 2011 Newsletter]

Chill was just drifting out to sea when Gaff arrived at the beach. May. School was still in session and the sun wasn’t quite hot enough to draw the hordes that crowded the sand during the summer. This was the weekend and there would be those visitors who wanted to get a jump on the fun, usually pushed by the kids. A smile. He missed those days with his children.

He unloaded chair, cooler, fishing rods. He pounded the flag into the sand beside his chair, awaking the thwap, thwap rhythm of its flapping. Sounds of people drifted his way. Up and down the beach he saw groups coming over walkways.

Cut bait. Family from the blue house was erecting a shade tent, laughing as they worked. Bait hooks. Little girl to his left squealed at the cold water and then splashed in giggling. Cast lines. Harsh yelling from somewhere behind. Greet Mother Water. Disturbance got closer. He sighed. Gaff shook his head because the harsh commands and screamed threats sounded familiar. What about his peace? The old fisherman turned to see the Clamorous Clan. He shrugged, watching.

Same ritual. Thrust and parry. Mother controlled; sons manipulated. Too bad. He hadn’t seen them in months, but they were still stuck, stuck in the unhealthy patterns. He turned to tend his lines, hoping for the big one. Maybe this time.

Her voice arrived before she did. “Hello, fisherman. You still here?”

He turned to see the mother of the Clamorous Clan marching down the beach in his direction. Gaff watched her as he waited, hands on hips. He shook his head at the frown dimming her light.

She shouted. “What are you so angry about? How could you be so pissed off this early in the morning?” She looked around his spot. “Looks like you just got here. Somebody made you mad already?”

He could see her misinterpretations, quick to anger. “Just got here.”

She looked at the giggling children in the surf just past him. “Those kids bothering you? You get so angry about kids playing in the waves, you ought to m
ove down the beach.”

He watched, more misinterpretations. There was movement behind her.

George Cauley was coming their way along the water line. He was limping pretty bad this morning and the scowl on his face told Gaff how much he hurt.

The CC mother was fussing about people in the house next door to their rental. Clothes always on the line and that blocked her view. On and on about how much laundry the woman did and it was always in the yard between her and the water. No consideration for other people. Why didn’t she use the dryer instead of line-drying clothes? They came for the water and that included the view from the house.

Gaff stuck his hand out toward her. “Name’s Gaff. I like to know people’s names.”

She stopped mid-sentence. “Oh, I’m Ivy.”  Her hand was limp. The touch was quick. He wondered what she was afraid of catching from the sign of friendship.

Just about then George got up next to them. “Mornin.’ Catch much?” His voice was gruff, gruffer than usual.

Gaff shook his head. “Nope. Early yet.”

George looked at Ivy and nodded a greeting. “I’ve seen you round.”

She glared at him. “We’re renting the Bell place. Got here yesterday.”

George frowned. “You’re the ones yelling all the time. I live next door and since you moved in there’s been no peace.”

Ivy’s feathers were so ruffled that she puffed up twice her normal size.

Gaff introduced them, hoping for a distraction. “Ivy this is George. George, Ivy.”

George was looking a little like a pufferfish himself. The color creeping into his face would make any beet proud. Gaff wondered if he would blow a gasket right here on the beach. Maybe a waterspout!!

Ivy went on with her previous thoughts. “You should keep your damned laundry in your house.”

This was overlaid by George’s shot. “Stay home to fight. People come here to rest and have a good time. Can’t even take a nap with you there. Go back home to yell and scream. Bet you can’t keep neighbors by tying them to the post.”

Gaff looked from one to the other and didn’t see any end of it without inserting himself into the fray. Hmmm. Behind George, Ivy’s husband buried his nose further in a book. The family behind him was watching, even the children stopped splashing to gawk. All up and down the beach, people were alarmed by the building fury. Ivy and George were oblivious to their audience.

Suddenly, a shrill female voice cut the antagonists apart. “George, you didn’t take your pain medicine. How come you left the house without it? I brought the car to take you back.”

George looked from Gaff to Ivy and pivoted suddenly to lumber off. His coloring didn’t much change, but the cause did. He was embarrassed by the abrupt interruption of hostilities, especially by something that implied weakness on his part.

Ivy’s feathers were smoothing slowly. “Bastard. What the hell…”

Gaff said quickly, “George’s got cancer. Treatment’s expensive so they couldn’t afford to replace their dryer when it broke.”

Ivy still blasted toxic fumes from her nostrils, like a dragon. “He’s a pushy bastard, if you ask me. Attacking me and me a renter, bringing money into this community.”

Gaff shook his head as he watched his friend stomp toward the walkway. “Wasn’t like that before he got sick, lashes out more. Gotta be tough to know you’re dying. Both physical pain and emotional.”

Ivy snorted, very unladylike. “He’s a damned bully if you ask me.”

Gaff turned to look her in the face, his own anger causing the blood to thump in his ears. “What pain causes you to lash out?” Oops, where is that censor?

Ivy froze, stopped breathing, too. “Me? I didn’t lash out. He started it. I was defending myself.”

Gaff looked up at the tip of his rod, settling his feelings. “And him? Does he have a right to peace?”

Harpoons were set to fly from Ivy’s eyes. Stay out of the way, Gaff, old boy. She was ready to go full out on him.

Another deep breath to calm. “How’d you feel when he told you to stop yelling?”

The question didn’t diffuse her emotion. “When he told me… Why I got mad. What right does he have to order me around?”

“You ever hear what they say in that house next door?”

Her eyes squinched together, thinking. Shook her head. “No, can’t say I have.”

He cocked his head as he looked at her. “And yet George said he hears you…” He watched her shrug and could see that she didn’t care. He looked to Mother Water for help and his eyes settled on footprints on the sand. He pointed to them. “What if I told you to walk down the beach following those footprints?”

Ivy barked, “Go to hell. I can walk where I want. This beach doesn’t belong to you.”

Gaff nodded and looked to the water for more words. “You want to follow your own path. What if I told you to walk that way to avoid being stung by jellyfish left by the waves?”

She nodded. The expression on her face spoke of confusion. “I’d go around.”

He checked the tip of his rod to see if he had a fish and saw it jiggle tentatively… maybe. “What if I asked you to walk around a sand castle my children were building?”

She kicked at the gull that got too close. A nod of agreement. A shrug.

Quickly, he asked, “What if I told you to keep the clothes off the line in your yard?”

She answered so quickly that she couldn’t possibly have thought about it. “You’re a damned selfish bully and I’d tell you to go to hell.”

Gaff nodded. “And yet that’s what you said to him.”

To her credit she did pause a beat. “But the clothes block my view from the kitchen.”

Gaff leaned down to pick up a shell. He shook his head, sad. “You got what you wanted… a fight.” His voice was low. “I don’t think you wanted to solve the problem. You just love to fight.” He moved onto the wet sand and threw the shell out into the waves.

She followed him into the wet. “I want him to take the clothes down.”

He turned to look her in the eyes. “Looks like you just want to order him to take the clothes down. You feel righteous because he fought back. If you really wanted the clothes down, you’d have negotiated, compromised. No, I’ll bet winning is what makes you feel good inside. That requires ordering people around. You bully people to feel strong, but you end up being more afraid.”

She turned on her heel and stormed down the beach. Would she think about it?

Gaff watched her storm cloud move away… talked to himself now. “George lashed out because he’s in physical pain and he’s afraid he’s going to die. What kind of pain, fear, makes you lash out? I just wonder? There is only love or fear.
