Happy New Year
from BILL
By Carol Howe*
[as it appeared in the January 2010 Newsletter]

I love the beginning of a new year when everything feels clean and newly possible.  This year, after spending so much time with the intricacies of Bill’s story, I feel doubly inspired to follow the lessons of his life as he continues to speak to us and am evermore determined to trace his steps from ego bondage to freedom.  He really was the first completely successful student of A Course In Miracles and his astounding presence is still right here guiding and reassuring each of us whenever we ask.  We are called to our transformation and assured the promise of success.

With the circumstances of our world, our collective mirror, in such a fractious and divided state, it certainly seems essential that we dedicate ourselves anew to the practice of forgiveness, continually  asking for help with keeping our focus on the desire for peace above all else.  Bill often asked for help when he felt he was going off-course.   He acknowledged that he prayed a single word, “Help,”  without specifying the subject or the object of his prayer.  As he grew in his own wisdom, his deepest desire was to forgive everyone and everything.  Jack and Layle Luckett, with whom he shared a home in his later days in La Jolla, could sometimes hear him earnestly praying his longer version, “Help me do this!” through the walls of the less-than-soundproof condo.  The Course speaks in many ways of the help that is always offered us; the following quotes appear in Never Forget To Laugh and are timeless in their relevance.

“In her book, You Are That, the American teacher Gangaji describes what we set in motion with the simple prayer, “Help”:

Help is here.  You are never separate from help.  Anytime you ask for help, help presents itself.  It is beautifully humbling to ask for help.  It is good to give up your idea of independence.  Just say “Please help,” and you will see instantly that every enlightened being in every realm, known and unknown, from all the dimensions, charted and uncharted, is immediately supporting, helping, reminding, pushing, pulling, embracing, holding, shaking or doing whatever is needed.  Your plea for help cuts through all past arrogance.  You are helped immediately because you are calling to the truth of yourself.

A Course In Miracles echoes this:

Everyone here has entered darkness, yet no one has entered it alone. . . .   For he has come with Heaven’s Help within him, ready to lead him out of darkness into light at any time.  The time he chooses can be any time, for help is there, awaiting but his choice.  And when he chooses to avail himself of what is given him, then will he see each situation that he thought before was means to justify his anger turned to an event which justifies his love.  He will hear plainly that the calls to war he heard before are really calls to peace.

Asking for help turns out to be the best insurance policy around!”

I felt very reassured of Bill’s helpfulness during the long process of writing Never Forget To Laugh.  For example, in October of 2008, I was traveling to a nearby town to help a friend, whose husband was in his final hours, plan the memorial service.  I often “communicated” with Bill in my awareness and on this afternoon, he seemed to be conveying the message that I did not have to be concerned with remembering everything necessary to the book myself, because he would help me with that.  That led to feeling particularly uplifted as I continued my journey.  Within no more than thirty seconds of being aware of his reassurance, I glanced into the lane of traffic to my right and my attention was drawn to the car just ahead and over from mine that sported an out-of-state license plate bearing the letters “WNT” (William Newton Thetford) – 65xx.  I was so startled on seeing the first five letters and digits, and because I was driving on a highway at a fast clip, I didn’t see the last two numbers.  But these were enough.  Beside his initials, which I had never randomly encountered before, Bill was 65 when he passed on and the Course began in 1965.  Even I, who am not unfamiliar with the paranormal, was taken aback and felt deeply blessed.

I believe it is not a coincidence that Bill’s book has come together at this time and not before or after. As secretive as he was in his earthly life, it would seem he now wants the world to know of his struggles as well as his assets for the helpful example they set.  Bill’s journey is every person’s journey; his willingness to change his mind in the face of what appeared to be daunting challenges, not his fame or brilliance, cleared the fog from his mind and allowed him to awaken.  He brings a transforming message, serving as a roadmap, making it abundantly clear that this is the path that everyone – one way or the other – inevitably follows.

Another way Bill was helpful was in his almost unsurpassed ability to be present with people and really listen.  People always felt very safe around Bill and it is that deep, underlying sense of security we all seek.  The comfort that comes from being unconditionally accepted is one of the most powerful feelings anyone can experience.   And we can pass it on; we can follow his lead and ask for his help.  If we want the world to be different, then each of us must become those places of safety ourselves, moving from self-doubt to an experience of  certainty.  Practicing the lessons of the  Course is a way to do that.  My son Greg and I were discussing this book when still in its early stages and he mentioned:

When people are quite literally energetically on the same wave length, there is that opportunity for tuning in or union.  You want to write this book not as a history book about what he had for breakfast, not merely to disseminate information, but as a way to transfer the fundamentals of who he was and why these things transpired in his life.  Properly represented, it will uplift people to heights closer to that level of tranquility where he operates.  It’s the same as someone going to an art museum, looking at a work and being absolutely inspired.  The person who painted it and the person who looks at it, even though not at the same time, are  functioning on the same wave length.  The observer is not  simply connecting with the work itself, but with the person who produced it. That’s what draws people to read books, to watch movies, attend cultural events.  They want to walk away with more than information, but with a newfound sense of renewal.

Bill’s presence is so intimately connected with the energy of the Course that it’s difficult for me to separate them, nor need I do so.  I can only agree with Greg; our goal is our renewal of spirit and being energetically involved with the particulars of Bill’s life can serve as a process to help us get there.  So, more than ever in this new year, I choose a conflict-free life, filled with the prayer of “Help me do this!” and, as we are reminded at the conclusion of Chapter Fifteen:

So will the year begin in joy and freedom.  There is much to do, and we have been long delayed.  Accept the holy instant as this year is born and take your place, so long left unfulfilled, in the Great Awakening.  Make this year different by making it all the same.  And let all your relationships be made holy for you.  This is our will.  Amen.

Q and A with Carmen

Good Questions

Questions & Answers

By Carmen Cameron*
[as it appeared in the January 2010 Newsletter]

There is nothing I like more than a good question about the Course.  And by “good question”, I mean a thought provoking one – a question that makes me reassess what I currently believe and perhaps come to see it in a new light. As a result, we have a very interactive study group of Course students here in Louisville where everyone is encouraged to share their insights and questions. It is also a very diverse group with people from widely varying religious backgrounds so we get a lot of very insightful questions and I’ve been making a note of them for the last 15 years.  Here is another of my favorite ones:

Question: Does life have to be a struggle?

Answer: Everyone knows what it’s like to “be in the flow” (and loves it). The strain in our existence comes from trying to solve or fix what is before us on our own (intellectually). The ego finds that methodology very rewarding (and the adrenalin rushes can be addicting 😉 because it LOVES to “win” (i.e., look good to other egos). LOL

Plus, the idea that we’re meant to struggle is a message the world holds dear so it supports it by rewarding those who do so if with nothing more than a pat on the back for having “tried”.

Before the Course, my whole identity was tied up to being “Miss Fix It” – the go-to-girl in dramatic circumstances – and so my ego was highly insulted by the idea in ACIM that my “little part” was just to ASK for Help. (I remember feeling very threatened by the very suggestion. ;-)… See More

But I also had to own the fact that most (if not all) of my “fabulous” solutions, while they might have fixed the obvious problem, created multiple NEW complications that would have been impossible to foresee (science calls this very familiar human phenomenon the Law of Unintended Consequences). lol

The Course says that everything we do when we are out of our natural environment (i.e., connecting with God) becomes a strain (and I’m assuming that that is what you mean when you use the word, struggle, here). Jesus even made a joke out of this in the urtext when he made a pun using the idea “that the only inevitable things are death and taxes” in one of the miracle principles, making sure that Helen and Bill knew that one of he meanings of “tax” was “strain”.

The fact that giving up the “need” for strain and stress in life on earth gives rise to so much resistance in us comes from nothing more, I think, than what the Course, itself, says. And that is that we have chosen to make our lives complicated and stressful IN ORDER TO avoid the simple truth that’s all around us (and within us).

The struggle is an avoidance mechanism – a delaying tactic of the ego – a way to keep our minds so completely preoccupied with trivia that we have an excuse to overlook what really matters: seeing the extension of God/love that is our brothers and ourselves.

Competition and struggle are very deeply ingrained in the modern psyche (in no small measure due to the unquestioning acceptance of the Darwinian ideal of “survival of the fittest”). Everyone is trained to “prove” themselves – to prove their value and right to live. And then along comes the Course and throws a monkey wrench into that sense of value. lol

Does life have to be a struggle? More importantly, SHOULD it? No. By connecting with the One Mind – the “field of infinite information” if you’re a hyperdimensional physicist – makes life into a constant flow – easy, spontaneous, unconflicted, i.e., joyful.

Am I there all the time? No. But this former full-time drama queen is now only a part-time princess.

Because I love the results I get from being in te flow so much more than I live the adrenalin rushes. And because my ego is much smaller now that it isn’t what I turn to first. And sometimes – when I’m feeling bored with how simple living here can be – I take a jog down memory lane and play the struggle game (just for fun ;-).

I didn’t mean to write a thesis here, Kim, but your topic is HUGELY important (so please forgive my running on – it just flowed lol).

ACIM in Prison

By Joe Wolfe*
[as it appeared in the January 2010 Newsletter]

Since early in 2007 the efforts to deliver a message of hope as offered in A Course in Miracles to prisoners have been ongoing. Prisoners have been a pet project for this writer for several reasons.

The first of these reasons might be attributed to the personal experience of having served most of a ten year sentence in prison, but the greater reasons have to do with what occurred while there and later events as a result of certain experiences.

It was 1974 and I was twenty-four years of age at the time. My own history up to that point was one like so many stories of a young street thug, growing up in a working class Chicago neighborhood, discouraged and disillusioned by the mediocrity and grind of what life had to offer.

That there had to be something better was always a predominating thought. So ‘better’ for me, was the excitement and the radical comradity of our little clique of thugs, always plotting, always stealing, always looking for that thrill. So when those activities resulted in my first arrests, confinement in juvenile punishment facilities and finally in a ten year prison sentence,( the big time), I was brought to a juncture. I would crash and burn. Previously embraced justifications for my anti-social behavior would soon be shattered and all of the glamour of the life of a criminal would cease to contain even a trace of validity. The underlying conviction that there had to be something better still remained but now (after the experience I’ll describe below) that something would take on an entirely new and remarkable definition.

So at twenty-four and while wallowing in the misery of prison life this is what occurred that would lead to forever changing the way I would perceive the world:

The real Me…The I…The Essence of Who and Where I AM emerged for just a few short minutes one summer afternoon after an entire sleepless night of worry and immense fear over the possibility that I might be killed the following day.  For the first time in many years I turned to the God I perceived and I prayed for deliverance. I begged and prayed for many hours with fever and intensity never before offered. ‘He’ answered…’He’ delivered me. And for a few brief moments ‘He’ lifted Me from the body and embraced Me as a loving Father does His Son and assured Me once again, that I would be alright.

While the body lay on the prison cell cot below, the awareness of “I” expanded to include every molecule of air around Me… every feature, the sunlight that streamed through the barred window, the trees and grass outside, the room itself…everything was Me. A crescendo of ‘sound’ accompanied the experience that completely absorbed all sound on earth and played as every instrument in every orchestra all over the world, in perfect harmony. This experience launched my search for the miraculous.

Now, many years later, and after much search, many books, and after the message of Forgiveness as gently prescribed in A Course in Miracles, I came to realize that the ‘person’ who searched would never find the answers. That person, a product of the same thought system that created him, would seek and never find because he was simply in the way. His beliefs, his concepts and ascribed personage blocked the very awareness of that which he sought. He had to get out of his own way first. He had to surrender his own image of who he thought he was before any Real knowledge could enter. The little self had to be first seen for what it really was, then sacrificed (for lack of a better word) to make room for something much bigger.

The Law of Forgiveness would lend him the means to do just that. In Forgiveness, the little self would fade into the oblivion from which it came and what would emerge is what was there all along. That Essence of the Real Self, that “I” and that assurance that everything would be alright. And from that Essence a Power uncommon in this perceived world would accompany it and everything would change for the better, forever.

Today, almost every day this writer visits the local post office to deliver copies of the original edition of A Course in Miracles [donated by Course in Miracles Society] along with an easy to comprehend introduction to The Course as made available through the text version of Gary R. Renard’s The End of Reincarnation to lists of prisoners who have expressed the desire to learn more about the Course. With the text version is a brief essay describing what is referred to as The Five Signs, five mystical experiences during this life which began at the age of three and culminated with the experience described above. This experience led to adopting a practical application of the spiritual discipline taught in A Course in Miracles.

With the help of people like Jon Mundy and his Miracles Magazine, Regina Dawn Akers and her The Holy Spirit’s Interpretation of the New Testament, Gary R. Renard and Tami Simon, (The End of Reincarnation) and Dov Fishman of The One Mind Foundation and Acim Gather, as well as Beverly Hutchenson, Marrianne Williamson, Robert Perry, and those friends who assist with postage donations, and especially Course In Miracles Society, a new wave of compassion is spreading throughout the populations of prisons all over the country.

For many of these prisoners, long forgotten by family or friends, this new avenue of communication brings welcome relief and a gentle, warm and loving response to their cry for help. It brings Hope where apathy, despair and grief make their home. It delivers Love where blame, guilt and punishment saturate the atmosphere. It brings the possibility of the Peace of God to a ‘place’ where the egos appetite for misery, pain and hopelessness can now move aside to welcome a glimmer of Light.

May the Love, Light and Peace of God be experienced by them, and with every second feel another moment spent in His Endless Embrace.

[as it appeared in the January 2010 Newsletter]

Peace – like Its Sister, Love – is not something that You can obtain and keep, doling it out only to your brothers and sisters who are ‘worthy’ of It in your eyes – your limited view.  Peace is the very foundation of your Be-ing, although It is carefully hidden behind all the concerns of what You are calling ‘life’.

Peace is your Substance – in the literal sense of the word ‘understanding’ – that which stands under.  Your true Peace flows from what You Know of God, of Reality.  It is absolutely synonymous with Love.  From your Peace only Love can flow; and Love is the … Expresser … no, there is a better word.  Listen for it.  … Love is the Fountain, the Source, the Context in Which Peace exists.

Can you imagine hating someone and being at peace, even in the ordinary way of life?  The attempt to amalgamate Peace and hatred is ludicrous, for one must be chosen.  You cannot go to the left and the right at the same time.  You are bound to “ride the horse in the direction it’s going.”3

The choice is made, moment by moment, and the good news is that You can always choose again.  How hard this seems in the throes of anger and hatred, and yet your help is at hand.  You are not alone in this opportunity.  Your help is “closer … than breathing”.4

(1972 manuscript as given to Hugh Lynn Cayce
by Helen Schucman and William Thetford)

Chapter 1

(May 3, 2006)

As I have said before “You always choose between your weakness and the strength of Christ as You.”  And it indeed is the Christ as You, for We are equals.  Never have I called Myself Holier than Thou.  I am here reminding You moment by moment of your Holiness.  And it is – as the saying goes – a beautiful Thing.

Allow this to dawn upon You, Sun~Rose, for I am not just coming to You so You can communicate with Our Brothers and Sisters.  I am speaking directly to You, too.  It is time for You to stop playing at being ‘human’ while knowing full well that Something Else is going on.  This is what You’re here to do.  This is True for everyone, and lest You miss My meaning, I am speaking of your Divinity – the Divine Nature that is True about You.

All of You have always wanted to be ‘special’ – all of You.  That is part of the ‘kick’ of pretending.  Well I am telling You that You – All of You – are special – along with every other part of Creation.  As St. Augustine said:  “God loves each one of Us as if there were only one of Us.”5  This is something You can feel right now, as You are willing.

1. There is no order of difficulty among miracles. One is not “harder” or “bigger” than another. They are all the same. All expressions of love are maximal. It is as easy to heal a cancer as it is a hangnail, for any attack on Your Perfection is impossible.

You can cut the air with a knife as many times as You wish, and yet You will never make it bleed.  Wounding You – the desecration of your Be-ing – is impossible – and therefore this desecration may be refuted at any time.

2. Miracles as such do not matter. The only thing that matters is their Source, Which is far beyond human evaluation. Why do I say they do not matter?  Because they are unnecessary to Reality.  Yet they are necessary to You as You experience yourself now.  They are the happy intrusion of Reality into your dreams.

to be continued….
