Kindle Edition of original edition

ACIM eBook Editions

This Kindle Edition of THE COURSE IN MIRACLES [original edition], is the kindle edition of the book published by “The Course in Miracles Society – CIMS” a non-profit organization. The first printing was in 2006. There have now been four printings.

This ‘original edition’ is the previously unpublished manuscript completed in 1972 by Helen Schucman and William Thetford. The manuscript contains approximately 6000 words which do not appear in the 1975 edition of The Course in Miracles published by the Foundation for Inner Peace [FIP]. The original manuscript was revealed during the discovery phase of the copyright litigation. Once the copyright was overturned, and the document found to be in the public domain, CIMS was permitted to publish it. It does not contain the PREFACE since the PREFACE was added in the 1975 FIP edition. It does contain a FORWARD written by CIMS.

The Course in Miracles is the result of the collaboration between two Columbia University psychologists: Dr. William T. Thetford and his colleague, Dr. Helen Schucman. In 1965, Helen experienced what she described as a Voice which spoke clearly in her mind, saying “This is a course in miracles. Please take notes.” Helen took down over a period of seven years some 1,500 type written pages which became A Course in Miracles.

The ‘original edition’ is the unabridged volume of the Course as it was completed by Schucman and Thetford in 1972. The TEXT was initially published as “Jesus’ Course in Miracles” in 2000. Marianne Williamson was a recipient of one of the first books printed. Once the litigation was final, all three volumes [TEXT, WORKBOOK, and MANUAL for TEACHERS] were published by CIMS in 2006. There are also two appendices: Glossary of Course Terms and The Early Editions and Editing by Robert Perry.

What is wonderful is that there are EDITIONS of the Course in Miracles the suit different learning modes. Some people like the personal approach of the ‘original edition’ which mentions Freud and Jung and some people prefer the FIP edition which is the edited manuscript for more public readability.

It’s a blessing that KINDLE has now been created to allow those who prefer the electronic version to now have access.

Good Questions

Questions & Answers

By the late Carmen Cameron*
[as it appeared in the December 2009 Newsletter]

There is nothing I like more than a good question about the Course.  And by “good question”, I mean a thought provoking one – a question that makes me reassess what I currently believe and perhaps come to see it in a new light. As a result, we have a very interactive study group of Course students here in Louisville where everyone is encouraged to share their insights and questions. It is also a very diverse group with people from widely varying religious backgrounds so we get a lot of very insightful questions and I’ve been making a note of them for the last 15 years.  Here is another of my favorite ones:

Question: What exactly is the ego? How do I recognize it? And how do I deal with it?

Answer: There is a line in the Original Edition (Bill Thetford’s first edit of the typed manuscript that Helen Schucman took in dictation of the Voice) that for some reason was deleted from the FIP editions that is the clearest and simplest explanation of what ACIM means whenever it is speaking about the ego. And that line reads:

The ego IS the belief of the mind that it is completely on its own.”*

So, the ego is nothing more that the subconscious belief that you are entirely separate and on your own. And that belief gives rise to a whole range of complex and automatic reactions to your environment based on that one, single premise. The belief that you are completely on your own, separate from everyone and everything you see (and, most importantly, separate from God), makes you react in self-defensive (self-protective) ways whenever you are presented with a choice. That complex of automatic and unexamined defensive reactions is the seemingly separate “entity” that the Course refers to as the ego.

This belief (and its resulting “network” of automatic responses) leads to choices based upon separateness which in turn lead to experiences of separation, forming a self-reinforcing feedback loop of even stronger belief and ever more extreme new experiences.  And those experiences are always of exclusion, rejection and loss that “prove” the reality of that one original belief. And so we create a wall of defenses, mostly subconsciously. This is what the Course is talking about when it refers to the “wall” comprised of a “thousand shards of meannesss”** – the thousands of hurts from the past that make us want to defend ourselves as separate beings from separate “others” with separate interests. And it is this that the Course asks us to question. (See Lessons 1-7.)

And the Course says it will lead us to NEW experiences – experiences through which we will ultimately learn the happy news that we are NOT alone, separate OR unsafe.***

Ego (from Latin, first person pronoun) definition: me, myself, I – alone, separate and independent. And the thought that “I” could have different and separate interests from you (any “you”) makes me hold “you” off at a distance. Makes me think “I” can win at your expense. Tells me that openness and honesty (the truth) will cost me something, somehow. For a defined and separate “you” presents a myriad of threats to limited “me”.

And so: “PRESENT joining IS your dread.” CH.26.IX.70 Because, “All choices in the world depend on this; – You choose BETWEEN your brother and yourself, and you will gain as much as he will lose, and what you lose is what is given him. How utterly OPPOSED to truth is this, when what the lesson’s purpose is to teach that what your brother loses YOU have lost, and what he gains is what is given YOU.” CH.31.IV.40

And the gentle but constant examination of that premise of separate interests behind our every choice is the undoing of the ego. Doing the Course really is that simple. Truly.

Jesus’ Course In Miracles

This is, of course, only My Course in the sense of My giving it to You, My beautiful sleeping Brothers and Sisters.

It might better be titled Jesus’ Gift to the world of dreams and dreamers.  My intention, given with this Gift, is that You all will waken to realize the Love that is Ours.

How do I describe this Love to You who think in terms of partiality?  It is … All: All there is including All.  Not one of You could ever be left out of this Love, out of the ‘loop’ as You say.  Everyone is not only included, but absolutely necessary – essential to Love, which would not be Love without You.

And I Love You unconditionally and unreservedly.

And I want You to understand that I am speaking to each and every one of You, whether You are reading this or not, no matter how good or bad You think You are, kind or mean, poor or rich, generous or stingy, intelligent or dull – whatever category, race or religion with which You have chosen to identify.

YOU are essential to God, to Me and to All.

Unlike the song about Henry Higgins the sun will not rise without You. The birds will not sing without You. The tides are still, motionless without You. Spring will not come without You. You are absolutely essential to and Loved by Your Creator.

Chapter 1

(April 30, 2006)

This is really a reminder that Your Life is a miracle; and so, in re-introducing You to miracles, I am re-introducing You to your Self.

This is a course in miracles. – A living class – a teaching about All of Us by Someone who remembers to Those who have forgotten.  It is a required course. Only the time you take it is voluntary. Free will does not mean that you can establish the curriculum. It means only that you may elect what you want to take at a given time.

The question here is: how high is your threshold of pain? – For life experienced as separation from Love is agony.  You eat, You drink, You drug, You make love and money to fill the space – relieve the emptiness, and it never lasts.

The course does not aim at teaching the meaning of love, for that is beyond what can be taught.  It – Love – is your very Be-ing2 and can only be Known as You begin to re-member – re-join.  You have gone on your own for so long that You have forgotten what it is like to be supported by the Whole.

It does aim, however, at removing the blocks to the awareness of love’s Presence, Which is your natural inheritance. The opposite of love is fear, but what is all-encompassing can have no opposite.  And Love is all-encompassing.  Every One is included.  You have forgotten what it is like to live without fear.  You might say that the absence of fear is Peace, just as the awareness of Love’s Presence is Peace.

This course can therefore be summed up very simply in this way:

Nothing real – and You are Realcan be threatened.

Nothing unreal exists.

Herein lies the Peace of You.

Who Are YOU? and What Do You Want?
By Nouk Sanchez & Tomas Vieira*
[as it appeared in the December 2009 Newsletter]

What do you want? What is that you really want, and are you ready to hear the truth?

The truth is that we don’t really know what we want and until we get clear about recognizing and owning this fact, we’ll never know what we’re really looking for let alone ever hope to find it!  Perhaps superficially we think we need money, a house, car, partner, better relationship or an education for our kids. Or maybe we think we need a special experience. Perhaps we think we need to control or avoid, or get healthier. Could there be an addiction that we want to give up? But the real question here is just who is doing all this wanting? Who desires to be in control and to know? Who is perceiving scarcity? Is it you?

Most would answer, “Yes it’s me”.  But the truth is it’s not. It’s nothing even close to who you are. Who you are is an extension of immense and infinite love. You’re a living extension of the awesome power of love with no opposite. That means that you’re a co-creator with infinite ability to extend what you are. And in giving your infinite abundance you increase it all around and within. You know that there is nothing to need, to have, to become, or to avoid. Can you imagine that? So, if you’re not experiencing this wonderful state every day then you’ve forgotten who you are and therefore, what you really want.

Let’s talk about the ego. The ego is a lot more than you think. It’s you and it’s me. It’s who we think we are. It’s the ‘me’ factor that’s unconsciously called upon every time we utter the word ‘I’. The ego consists of all our past memories and future hopes and fears. It’s every single thought we have that’s not joined with the Holy Spirit (Wow, that’s almost every decision we make!). All our judgments and all our beliefs are the lifeblood of the ego. Even every urge we have to control our partner, child, work associate or situation arises from the ego. Every time our life presents us with something we don’t like (a flat tire in heavy traffic) and we say, “This is wrong”, that’s the ego. Feelings of anger, fear, frustration, lack, distrust, and guilt are all the ego. Whenever we think we know what’s in our own or another’s best interests, it’ll be the ego. In fact the ego is who we think we are. You can substitute the word ‘me’ with ego.

The ego is a thought apart from God, apart from infinite love. In reality, nothing exists apart from God so we, as we currently think of and see ourselves, don’t exist.  A very frightening thought! It needn’t be though because A Course In Miracles clearly tells us that we are not who we think we are and it sets out a very clear pathway back to the memory of our loving Oneness.

Earlier I said that we don’t know what we want. And I meant it. You won’t know what you want until you undo who you think you are. Because what you think you want comes from the incessant neediness of the ego. And being a will that’s apart from God, the ego ensures you keep searching everywhere for what you want  except within your mind; the only place where change and healing is required so you can remember who you truly are. The mind is the cause of everything. The world we see is its effect. The ego is a figment of our imagination that seems so real. It’s only a pile of uninvestigated beliefs based on past individual and collective beliefs that we rarely question like the prized value of the body, money, education or gaining more knowledge and skills. All our current beliefs are to keep the ego alive and to fuel the separated state. Of course many are cleverly concealed beneath a beneficent exterior.

If you’re a Course student/teacher then you’ll realize that our mission here is to unlearn everything we think we know including the identity we’ve mistaken as ‘me’. And it’s not until we’re committed to unlearning that we begin to understand that the ‘I’ we thought we were didn’t have a clue what it really wanted. The ego is a self-perpetuating saboteur whose only goal is to keep us looking out there for something that will never deliver.

On the spiritual path what we often aim for is to transform our lives. And what we find difficult to grasp or accept is that no real transformation is possible at the level of form because the only place transformation can take place is in the mind. The ego however, is constantly trying to transform us, others and situations. We have an addiction to transformation at the level of form and we’re not even conscious of it. We are constantly trying to improve our lives at the effect level and not at the cause level (mind). The real aim therefore for any serious spiritual seeker is to transcend our life. That means we acknowledge that change occurs only in the mind and that we surrender our beliefs and values to the Holy Spirit for reinterpretation. This is undoing the ego; undoing the belief in separation.

We will not know anything until we un-know. The ego can’t love, period. It cannot give love and it can’t receive love. And while we’re still mistaking the ego for the “I” we think we and other are, we’ll never know love. Even the love we have for our children, partners, and parents is strongly tainted by an unconscious fear of loss and expectation. Love and fear cannot co-exist together. So the best we can hope to attain in the ego state is a pseudo love that’s always under threat of loss through separation or death. Love transcends the body but how many of us really know and experience this consistently? Aren’t we devastated when we lose a loved one? Wouldn’t you want to know a love that couldn’t ever be terminated? Wouldn’t you want to feel just as close to your loved one while they’re on the other side of the world or after their body died? This is the level and perception of love that the Course is offering us, not in another life-time but now, here in this life. Jesus said that we could experience the same miraculous perception that he lived (and still does!) to share, not some time in the future but now.

On a personal note, Tomas and I have that miraculous experience of transformed love. It is the fuel of our commitment to share our book and message with you. We have an unusual story of love. We were guided to release the ego form of the union (marriage) in order to save the relationship. So we’re now a divorced couple who absolutely adore each other! We had a (special) love that was miraculously transformed during the process outlined in what ACIM calls ‘The Development of Trust’ (The Manual for Teachers, Page 9). And it’s this very process (the six stages of undoing the ego) that we so want to help facilitate by explaining in simple terms just what is likely to be involved at a practical level in these stages of spiritual awakening. We are love but we can’t possibly feel and know this until the one block to the awareness of its presence is dismantled. And please don’t make the same mistake Tomas and I did many years ago. Don’t think that it’s remotely possible to keep your own will and experience real love and abundance at the same time. It cannot be done and will inevitably lead to more suffering.

This idea of undoing who you think you are is a very threatening one. Because you think you’re going to sacrifice so much. The truth is that once you truly commit to this process you grow to appreciate the absolute valuelessness of what you previously valued. You don’t lose anything; except your fear, distrust and need to control. And that’s when the absolute delight of realizing and receiving comes in! You don’t just hope, you know that Holy Spirit’s Will is all you want and you’re overjoyed to recognize it as your own. The need to have, to get, to avoid, and to control, falls away and you see that you have no needs. There’s no doubt and there’s nothing to lose. There’s a genuine growing urge to give unconditionally because we no longer feel empty, we feel full. We know that giving is receiving and we experience the principle that whatever we give only increases both for the giver and the receiver. And replacing the ego’s miscreations are the Holy Spirit’s inspired desires to give that arise from abundant gratitude leading to increasing gratitude as they are extended.

Now do you know what you want? And if this is really what you want then are you prepared to commit to undoing, to unlearning and listening to Holy Spirit’s Voice instead of the ego? If you are then you will come to find an experience far more wonderful than your wildest imaginings…And what will it cost? It’ll cost nothing less than your self, the false ego self that is.
